March 16th, 2014:

THE JUNIPER HILL SCHOOL:

Juniper Hill School in Alna qualifies as a school of choice for Westport Island families. The founder of Juniper Hill, Anne Stires, is a long time resident of Westport Island.  She grew up here, and is again living back on the island.

Juniper Hill School uses the outdoors as the primary classroom and a springboard for curriculum, thereby connecting children to themselves, to each other, and to their communities through studying both natural and human environments.  With its integrated curriculum, immersion in the natural world, and commitment to social justice and understanding, Juniper Hill nurtures happy, healthy, creative, loving children, who are becoming masters of their own learning and are eager to help make the world a better place.

Juniper Hill's approach to teaching synthesizes the best of 20th century progressive education with a 21st century place-based approach.  It serves pre-school and elementary students in central and midcoast Maine.

Enrolling for Fall 2014:
Full-time Place-Based Elementary School -
1st/2nd (6-7 years old) and

 WINDOW INSULATING UNITS

As we have for a number of years, The Westport Island Human Resources Committee together with a group of dedicated volunteers from the Town will again be helping our residents obtain transparent window insulating units for their homes to significantly lower winter heating costs.

It is estimated that heat losses through a home’s window can be up to 30% of the total. We encourage all residents to consider these ENERGY SAVING devices that are quite easy to build and will easily provide TWICE THE ENERGY SAVINGS of your existing windows, for even the most energy efficient types. These units both added insulation and stop drafts. Over the past years our volunteers helped to make approximately 700 window units for our residents.

The cost of window units is generally between $10 and $15 per window, depending on size. However, we only ask for residents to pay for what they can afford.

Our volunteer work group will  be helping to building window units this winter for residents on Saturday mornings at the Westport Fire House. We welcome interested residents to stop by to discuss their needs, learn and to help. However, we also will be taking orders for such units and helping to measure your windows. If you wish to have units for your home please let us know.

Please contact --- Newt Blakesley 882-4753, Bill Hopkins 882-6047,  or Dennis Dunbar 882-8143
